JOAN LEMLER BIOGRAPHY & STATEMENT
JOAN LEMLER Artist Statement Images infused with traces of human presence, generally absent the people, are ideal venues for my landscape photographs. I want the streets, rooms, and locations, where both solitude and secrets reign, to evoke in the viewer’s mind contemplation, fascination and longing. My photographs reflect the layering and constant changing of life, a history revealed though remains and symbols, like calligraphic graffiti on brick walls, or torn billboards which once conveyed vital messages to crowds no longer there. The object in its degradation, the emptiness of the space, reveal a strange beauty in the interplay of light, color and texture. The photographs evoke the life that is past, in images like the slightly decaying spiral staircase rendered haunting beautiful by sunlight that falls on the worn steps and faded walls. In my Polaroid transfer pieces this endearing fragility appears at the physical level of the artwork, whose tissue of emulsion frays in the transfer to the new surface. Artist’s Biography I have been photographing for over 20 years, but have only recently begun to show my work publicly. Many of my images are of New York, but I have shot in Los Angeles, San Francisco, as well as in France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Mexico and Japan. I shoot color and black and white slide film exclusively, with a 35mm camera.
